A day at Kew Gardens

By | May 18, 2014

We decided to have a proper day out as we’ve been so busy lately. We managed to get two free adult tickets to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew so decided to head there. It didn’t take too long to get there and we found some free parking over the road from the main entrance.

Our first stop once inside was the amazing Rhizotron and Xstrata Treetop Walkway. The 18-metre high, 200-metre walkway guides visitors around the crowns of lime, sweet chestnut and oak trees and gives you a brilliant viewpoint over parts of Kew.

The walkway’s structure is based on a Fibonacci numerical sequence, which is often present in nature’s growth patterns, and there were little signs to read along the way. The children were happy to be up amongst the tree tops and it was definitely worth it for the views.

We walked over to Queen Charlotte’s Cottage which was built for the sole purpose of eating picnics. Sadly we missed the display of bluebells which this area is known for but the ancient woodland was still very beautiful.

We were happy to explore and miss the main attractions although I know there are tons of things for children to do.  Our two were content picking daisies and gathering a few pine cones to craft with at home.

We walked along the side of the lake back to a nice cafe for lunch and to watch the crowds that were still coming into the gardens.

We had a lovely couple of hours and can’t wait to go back again.

It is so long since I have been to Kew Gardens, but it still looks every bit as beautiful as i remember. Infact I think that could be said of all gardens in May, it is my favourite month here on the farm too. Sometimes it is good to miss the main attractions and go exploring and doing your own thing. I love the photo of the two children looking up together. Thankyou for sharing your time at Kew on Country Kids.
