Reading with boys

I love to read and hope Edward will inherit my love of reading. But how can I make sure this happens?

He has a huge box of books in the lounge as well as books in his room but at 17 months old he obviously can’t read. He loves to flick through books and really enjoys his touchy feely books. We go to storytime at the local library once or twice a week and he’s had a library card since he was 5 months old.

However, this is all a bit meaningless if we don’t make an effort to read with him and help him enjoy reading.

Today we went to the library as usual and met up with some friends for storytime. I noticed that a lot of the children sat and listened to the story and joined in with the songs. Not Edward. He listened to two short stories (celebrating Roald Dahl week), watched me join in some songs then pointed to the playhouse and was off.

playing, definitely not listening!

I know he’s young and as long as he enjoys himself that’s all that really matters. One of our friends has potty trained her daughter at just 18 months – that’s something we won’t even be trying to compete with just yet!
