We had an amazing day out in the sunshine today. In the morning we went to Wings and Wheels (the longest running R/C model show in the UK) – for the husband, obviously. It was incredibly hot with no shade but we spent 4 hours there and the children seemed to enjoy themselves.
In the afternoon we visited North Weald station, a former London Underground station in North Weald, just down the road from the air show. Located between Epping and Blake Hall stations on the Central line the station is now part of the Epping Ongar Railway. Luckily for us the station was open as part of a LU105 heritage open day!
The approach to the station is really lovely with a huge area in front of the station so you get a great view of the old station with the trains behind it. We were so lucky that Met No. 1 was there, which we saw at the Acton Depot a couple of months ago.
We spent ages on the platform watching the trains (both steam and diesel) before grabbing refreshments from the old buffet car. The toddler was very happy as it was just like his Thomas books which read at every bedtime. We’ve promised him a trip on the trains there soon.
The obligatory station sign photo.
Then it was a quick stop at Epping station (the end of the line!) before home. Epping is the north-eastern terminus of the Central Line and in Travelcard Zone 6.
Linking up with Country Kids
I’m loving this post. We have just got our very own railway off the ground here at Coombe Mill, ok only a miniature one but the kids are loving their afternoon rides. My kids and Farmer Nick would just love your day with the railway and the model show, your pictures in the sunshine are amazing. Thank you for sharing on Country Kids.
So great getting up close and personal with the trains! Hope you get to go on a ride soon!
