Learning Outdoors with the Meek family

We recently received a copy of Learning Outdoors with the Meek family by Tim Meek and Kerry Meek to review. I read it before we came away so I would have some ideas in case we visited any special places.

Education does not always need to take place behind a desk, in a classroom or with a teacher. Family time is just as important as school time, and the 52 ‘Ed-ventures’ provide parents with a fantastic bank of ideas to support and enhance their children’s formal schooling. Each exciting adventure can easily be fitted into a weekend.

Chapters include: Buildings to See, Places to Go, Travel & Transport, By the Water, Country Life and Culture & Entertainment and includes ideas on what to do before you get there, while you’re there and when you get back, plus tips, suggestions and ways of encouraging different ways to learn via reading, listening, visual, sensory and physical means.

Today we went for a trip on the Kennet and Avon canal from The Wharf Devizes. The trip took about 2 hours and passed through a couple of locks. The volunteers who took us were really friendly and knowledgable which was useful as Big Brother had a *lot* of questions.

We loved our trip on the canal boat and Learning Outdoors gave me some ideas for questions to get the children thinking as well as some activities to reinforce their learning when we got home.
