Vegetable goodness

By | November 19, 2011

The legendary Green Giant is back to help mums encourage their families to enjoy vegetable goodness with the support of Olympian and Commonwealth sporting superstar Colin Jackson CBE, interactive events, free Green Giant Height Charts and a Facebook campaign to share advice for mums from mums.

It is clear families need advice and tips on how to increase their vegetable goodness as:-

  • 33% of boys & 34% of girls aged 2-18 classified as overweight or obese
  • The healthy eating challenge is something mums face on a daily basis.
  • Boys aged 11-18 years, on average, only consuming 3.1 portions of fruit and vegetables per day,
  • Girls in the same age group are consuming 2.7 portions per day

According to a recent survey conducted by Green Giant Sweet Corn, parents are still having to resort to tactics including hiding veggies and bribing children with dessert to encourage them to eat their 5-a-day.

The Green Giant survey revealed classic tactics and old fashioned subterfuge are still being used by parents, with the number one on the list the simple camouflaging of veg within other foods and sauces.

Second on the list is the threat of no dessert if veggies aren’t eaten first, while the third was telling children that vegetables would give them special powers such as the old ‘carrots will help you see in the dark’, or ‘spinach will give you muscles as big as Popeye’.

Fortunately Edward loves his food and I enjoy cooking healthy meals for him which are packed full of vegetables. Fingers crossed he doesn’t turn into a fussy eater!
