Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

It’s really difficult to pick our favourite Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler book but Stick Man has to come pretty high on our list.

Stick Man lives in the family tree With his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. But it’s dangerous being a Stick Man. A dog wants to play with him, a swan builds her nest with him. He even ends up on a fire! Will he ever get back to the family tree?

There are lots of crafting opportunities with this book but we decided to go simple. My toddler loves picking up sticks when we’re out for a walk so I thought we would make our own Stick Man and recreate the cover of the book.

I roughly drew the outline of the trees and the wood and the toddler started by colouring in the blue sky. Then he got to work sticking pieces of coloured paper to make the two trees.

The next step was to add lots of glue and add cotton wall balls for the snow.

Finally we made our stick man by bending pipe cleaners round the stick for arms and legs and adding a big pair of googly eyes.

I think he looks pretty good!
